Why can't I get on the Web at school?

To prevent students from accessing inappropriate websites while at school, Brookline Public Schools has installed what is called a "proxy server," which you might think of as a filter that prevents these sites from streaming into our network. The network is able to detect whether you have this filter on or off, and if you have it off, the network will not allow you access to the web. You must have the filter--the proxy--on in order to access the web within the Brookline Public Schools' network.

The proxy is something that you can (and will need to) turn on and off. Again, it must be on to get on the web around here.

To turn on the proxy for Firefox:

1. Open Firefox. It will not load a page, but you need to have it open.

2. In the "Firefox" menu, go to "Preferences..."

3. Click on the "Network" tab.

4. Then click on "settings."

5. Click on the radio button that reads, "Manual Proxy Configuration."

6. Type in the following information: for "http proxy" type, proxy.brookline.k12.ma.us and for "port" type in 8080.

7. Click on the box that reads, "Use this proxy server for all protocols."

8. Click "OK" and then exit out of the Preferences menu. You're set to surf.

Important!!!! When you get home, you must turn OFF the proxy or you won't be able to access the web; the proxy is ONLY for the Brookline network. Simply re-trace your steps: Firefox-->preferences-->network tab-->settings-->radio buttom for "no proxy."
